On 12 December 2007, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) published an alarming report explaining the dangers to world peace resulting from planetary warming: deterioration of water resources, risks of cyclones and floods, lower agricultural output and climatic migrations. Such phenomena could well worsen tensions in regions already made fragile by conflicts, particularly in the South. The Western countries, in their part, would be affected by the flow of "climatic refugees". Al Gore, who received the Nobel Peace Prize on December 12, supported the report's conclusions.
Still, according to that report, such a scenario can be avoided if the international community implements effective and appropriate measures for combating planetary warming.
